It’s always funny to me that people think someone’s values and politics have no bearing on their work. People say this to me all the time—who cares if Barkley is a right-wing libertarian, he’s a *scientist* so it doesn’t affect his work. As though science—especially social science, is value-neutral, as though his politics and values don’t inform the very questions he asks, much less the conclusions he draws from the (often very flawed, sketchy) and the policy proposals that stem from them. #smh
Anyway, this is a great story, though hardly surprising. Snake oil salesmen are a pretty pathetic bunch.
I parrot all kinds of things I learn in therapy and other contexts but I'm quick to admit I struggle to take my own advice. I think humility is an attractive quality in these coachlike types. He reminds me of myself, if the third-party descriptions given are accurate, in that he seems to want control of the things in life that aren't always totally controllable. For me, since I'm aware of this but still craving control regardless, I end up feeling anxious a lot. A lot-a lot.
People are complicated. Many of us excel in some areas and fail miserably in others. Apparently, Huberman is no exception. Smart people with good information can have messy personal lives. It happens. If the information Huberman presents is inaccurate, say that. But don´t try to use his personal failings as a cudgel to bash his professional accomplishments.
Really interested to look at robert Crawfords work! And he lives in my neck of the woods- cool. Health sociology is becoming my new (and old) interest.
